Which is much less cool than it may seem.
Clamoring and fighting from dusk till dawn;
Often causing causing a comedic scene:
Անքլերէնիս մկանները աւելի մէծ են,
But my Armenian can always get a punch in.
It creeps out my mouth when the timing’s wrong.
And one begins to recall a weird dream,
And everyone looks at me like I have a screw loose.

Beneath my surface lies turmoil unseen.
A conflicted body ruled by both sun and moon.
An Armenian—American, hiding in the hyphen.
My ancestral blood, or where I come from?
When two people from one body do stem?

Մy կrasփ on reaլitի thը թwo consուme.
Երpէk bիտի kտնե՞m խaղaղուtիւն,
I ֆear I մay be էxփecթing aն aնsweր tու soon…

(Translated and transliterated for folks who might not be able to read the Armenian)

Within my one mouth are two tongues | Meg pernees mech yergoo lezoo ooneem
Which is much less cool than it may seem.
Screaming in my one head nonstop | Meg kulkhoos metch antatar guh jchahn
Clamoring and fighting from dusk till dawn.
My English’s muscles are stronger | Anklerenees mganneruh avelee medz en,
But my Armenian knows how to get a punch in.
Like a snake, my Armenian slithers cleverly | Otsi bes gu soghah hayerenus khoramang
And creeps out my mouth even if the timings wrong,
Their constant competition with one another | Oo eerar hed meeshd guh mrtsagtseen
Often causes a comedic scene.
Let’s say one day I’m sitting with my other* friends | Usenk odar ungernerov nsdadz guh khoseem
And one of them recalls a weird dream,
Suddenly, “You slept with your ass open!”** yells my Armenian tongue, | Hangardz “vorut pats barger es!” guh borah Hayeren lezoos
And that’s when everyone looks at me like I have a screw loose.
Though their interactions are comedic, | Teyev komeeg eh yerp asonk harapereen,
beneath my surface lies turmoil unseen.
Within this liminal space is an uncertain existence | Yergoo lezvee michantskin guh kdnem anorosh koyootyoon,
A conflicted body ruled by both sun and moon.
Which one do I feel loyal to | Vo՞r megoon havadarmootyoon uzkam,
My ancestral blood, or where I come from?
Whom do I address this question to, | Vo՞r eenkzeenkees ays hartzuh ooghem
When two people from one body do stem?
With each pulling me in its direction constantly | Yergooki meechev antatar kashgurdoom
My grasp on reality the two consume.
Will I ever find peace? | Yerpek beedee kudne՞m khaghaghootyoon
I fear I may be expecting an answer too soon.
